ECOWAS Calls for Respect of Venezuela’s Sovereignty
In its declaration, ECOWAS noted that it was observing the unfolding situation in Venezuela with concern.
Although acknowledging the authority of nations to combat international crimes such as terrorism and narcotics trafficking, the bloc emphasized that "ECOWAS wishes to remind the international community about their obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other as enshrined in international law, especially article 2 (4) of the United Nations Charter."
Reaffirming its solidarity with Venezuelans, the organization expressed backing for citizens in their efforts to determine the future of their nation through an inclusive process.
The death toll from Saturday’s US military action in Venezuela has climbed to 80, according to a media outlet, which cited a senior Venezuelan official warning that the figure could increase further.
Earlier, Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino stated that a significant portion of Maduro’s security personnel had been killed during the operation, though he did not provide precise numbers.
President Donald Trump confirmed that the US military campaign led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and pledged to maintain American control over Venezuela temporarily, deploying US forces if necessary.
