Russia offers cooperation to Venezuela to counter maritime blockade
According to official statements, the issue was discussed during a phone call on Monday between Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The talks reportedly focused on the “hostilities” and “flagrant violations of international law” unfolding in the Caribbean region.
As stated in an official message shared by Gil, Russia committed to offering full support to Venezuela, particularly through diplomatic engagement at the United Nations Security Council. “Foreign Minister Lavrov firmly expressed Russia's solidarity with the people of Venezuela and with President Nicolas Maduro Moros and reaffirmed his full support in the face of hostilities against our country,” he said.
Russian officials also cautioned that the expanding US naval presence could have serious implications, warning that Washington’s actions carry "far-reaching consequences" for regional stability and represent a direct risk to international maritime transport.
This alignment follows Trump’s recent claims about deploying the “largest navy ever assembled in the history of South America.” While US authorities have framed the operation as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking, reports indicate that two oil tankers have already been seized, with US forces attempting to intercept a third vessel.
Over the weekend, Venezuelan officials announced that Iran had likewise offered support to help "confront piracy" by US forces. According to official remarks, Iran’s Foreign Ministry urged the international community to "firmly oppose" the blockade, characterizing the US seizures as unlawful and unilateral.
Trump has maintained that the naval measures will stay in effect until Caracas returns "all assets" he alleges were taken from the United States. Venezuela, for its part, has condemned the actions as "state-sponsored piracy" and has formally asked the UN Security Council to denounce the maneuvers in order to safeguard the security of global navigation.
