US House blocks measures to rein Trump’s military actions in Venezuela

(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives on Wednesday voted down two Democrat-led resolutions aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s military operations targeting Venezuela.

The proposals, introduced under the War Powers Resolution—which allows Congress to challenge unauthorized military action—sought to curb US strikes on vessels Washington claims are linked to drug cartels or “narcoterrorists” in the Caribbean. The first resolution, intended to halt ongoing attacks, was defeated 210–216, despite near-unanimous Democratic support and a few Republican votes in favor.

A second measure, which would have barred any new military action in or against Venezuela without congressional approval, also failed narrowly, 211–213.

With both votes rejected, Trump retains full authority to continue naval strikes and pursue other measures tied to his pressure campaign, including the recent blockade on Venezuelan oil shipments. Since September, US operations at sea have reportedly killed over 90 people in strikes targeting cartel-linked vessels. Trump has additionally threatened strikes on Venezuelan territory, alleging the government harbors “narcoterrorists”—claims Caracas denies.

The Venezuelan government condemned US actions as illegal and contrary to international law, free trade, and freedom of navigation. It also rejected Trump’s claims to Venezuelan oil and mineral resources, insisting that “Venezuela will never again be a colony of an empire or any foreign power.”
